How OptimalLayout works
OptimalLayout is a free online cutting list optimizer for plywood, MDF, melamine, OSB and other sheet materials. It calculates the most efficient way to cut your parts from full sheets so you minimize waste, save material cost and reduce sawing time.
Enter your sheet sizes
Start by adding the stock sheets you have available — for example 2440 × 1220 mm plywood or 2800 × 2070 mm melamine panels. You can add multiple sheet types in one project (Pro), or one sheet type on the free plan.
List the panels you need
Add each part with width, height and quantity. Free users can add up to 10 unique panel types per calculation, which covers most cabinets, shelves and small furniture projects.
Set the saw blade kerf
Kerf is the width of material removed by the saw — typically 3 mm for a panel saw, 2.4 mm for a track saw, and 1.5 mm for a fine cross-cut blade. OptimalLayout adds the kerf between every cut so your parts end up the exact size you asked for.
Run the optimizer
Our nesting engine packs your parts onto sheets using a guillotine bin-packing algorithm. It tries multiple rotations and orderings, then picks the layout with the highest material yield.
Export a cutting diagram or table
Download a PDF with the visual cutting diagram, a printable cut list table, or both. Pro users can add their company name and logo; free exports include a small OptimalLayout watermark.
